” … why can it not know the initial articles?”

Because it’s difficult to teach grammar to a computer.
In German, does “eine” mean “a” or “one”?
In German, does “die” mean “the” or “that which”
Is “Los Angeles” the city or not?
Is “de” the French “of”, or the Dutch “the”?
And these are only the obvious.

Great points! But would it not be easier to have a check box to tell the computer “this starts with an article” rather than remembering the indicator number? Assuming that the initial article is more common than the alternative version of the word … what do you think? Would that work?
