A theft by any other name….

is still stealing.  The problem of theft in a library is nothing new. Heck, I even talked a bit about it previously myself.

But what about books and videos and other materials that were legitimately checked out and then never returned? Libraries and librarians are mocked in the press when someone is arrested for theft because of overdue items. A quick goohoo (google/yahoo) search shows Texas Woman arrested and Man gets prison but there are many many other stories (was it Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert who did a segment on overdues?).

Uhm. See, the thing is, they are stealing. Libraries are very accommodating – we send overdue notices. We forgive fines. We ask. We beg.  In the grand scheme, is it the same as murder? No but neither is taking items from the grocery store sans payment. Both are crimes. In a grocery store you’re stealing from a company. In a library, you’re stealing from everyone else in the community.
